In Loving Memory of Harold Thomas Hacker
12/22/1946 – 5/27/2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harold Thomas “Tom” Hacker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and loyal friend. He passed away at home in Haines, Oregon, on May 27, 2025 at the age of 78.
Tom was born in Greasy Creek, Tennessee, to Clifford and Ora Hacker. From the age of six he lived in Baker, Oregon. He married the love of his life, Toby Brown, in high school, and the two of them were married 60 years. They built a loving life together and raised their five children—Darrel, Myka, Kyle, Brandy, and Bryce—in Haines, Oregon, where he lived the rest of his life. As their children grew and grandchildren came along, Tom took special pride in watching his family grow around him. He was proud of his children and grandchildren, and he beamed when holding or playing with his great-grandchildren.
Tom proudly served and retired from Baker County Road Department as a skilled equipment operator. He had a lifelong love for old cars and trucks that began with his first car, a Ford Coupe. A mechanic at heart and by passion, he always had grease-stained hands and could usually be found working on something in his garage or under the hood of an old truck in his driveway. He found real satisfaction in fixing things, was always learning more about the cars and trucks he loved, and usually had the latest issue of Hot Rod magazine sitting on the coffee table. Fast cars, old pickups, and local car shows were among his greatest pleasures.
Tom liked long scenic drives, picnics, and country roads. He enjoyed spending time at the family cabin on the Lochsa River in Idaho. He had a big heart and a soft spot for animals, and over the years, cared for many beloved cats and dogs. Tom will be remembered for his steady presence, his quiet strength, and grounded wisdom.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Toby; his children Myka Spriet (Rob Miller), Kyle Hacker, Brandy Bennett (Monty), Bryce Hacker (Jennifer), his son from previous marriage, Tom Maliwauki (Pam) and Tom’s sister Tammy Sawyer (Michael); his 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride; his sister Susie Perrine and her children: Audie Perrine, Steve Perrine and Tony Vasquez (Norma); and his dear friend of many years, Jesse Stiltner (Deloris).
Tom was preceded in death by his son, Darrel Hacker (1987); son-in-law Harley Spriet; parents, Clifford and Ora Hacker; sister, Helen Gates, and her husband, Clay Gates; and his brother-in-law, Louis Perrine.
Friends are invited to join the family at Tom's home following the Haines 4th of July parade. Online condolences can be shared at www.tamispinevalleyfuneralhome.com
