Mark Manderscheid Obituary

Mark Nolen Manderscheid, age 67, passed away peacefully at his home in Mt. Vernon, Oregon, on January 24, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children after a courageous battle with metastatic bladder cancer.  A memorial service will be held at the Long Creek Community Church, in Long Creek, OR (269 Hardisty Street) on April 5, 2025 at 10 a.m. with a potluck luncheon to follow at the Seventh Day Adventist Hall (215 SE Main Street). If you would like to bring a dish to the luncheon the family requests sides and desserts.

Mark was born on August 1, 1957, in Stayton, Oregon, to John Melvin Manderscheid and Twyla Sue Carpenter-Manderscheid, He grew up near Scio as an only child. He spent much of his childhood on his grandparents' farms on Rogers Mountain and McCully Mountain in Linn County. From an early age, he developed a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, learning woodworking and metalworking from his grandfathers. These early experiences shaped his lifelong passion for working with his hands and building things from the ground up.

Shortly after high school, he met his wife, Tami. They married on March 30, 1978, and started their journey filled with hard work and shared dreams. Mark began his career working in sawmills and plywood mills before relocating to Mitchell, Oregon, during the timber recession of 1980. There, he found work on a cattle ranch and gained invaluable skills that would serve him throughout his life.

In the mid-1980s, he moved his family to Long Creek, Oregon, where he took a job at Blue Mountain Lumber Products. Never one to shy away from a challenge or hard work, Mark spent his spare time building a log truck from the ground up—determined to fulfill his dream of becoming an owner-operator. His perseverance paid off as he successfully ran his own trucking business for 20 years in both logging and construction with the support of his family.

In the spring of 2000, Mark and Tami fulfilled another lifelong dream when they purchased their forever home near Mt. Vernon—a place they lovingly renovated over the years.

For the last nine years of his career, Mark worked for the Oregon Department of Transportation Highway Road Maintenance Crew out of Condon. There, he made many friends and enjoyed spending more time with his family.

Mark considered his greatest accomplishment to be raising his three children—Shelby, John, and Skye—and instilling in them the values of hard work and integrity. He was independent and self-sufficient, always preferring to build something himself rather than buy it finished. His resourcefulness became a defining trait that carried through to his family.

His work ethic was unbreakable, his integrity unquestionable, and honesty was the foundation upon which he built both himself and his family. Though shy in crowds, he made friends wherever he went and was known for his authenticity, determination, and passion for life.

Mark had a lifelong love for motorcycles, the outdoors, early mornings, and sunrises—simple joys that brought him peace throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 47 years, Tami; daughter Shelby Manderscheid (Cody) of Pendleton; son John Manderscheid (Becky) of Athena; daughter Skye Forman (Spencer) of Antelope; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous friends and acquaintances who will miss him dearly.

Mark was preceded in death by his father, John Melvin Manderscheid, and his mother, Twyla Sue Carpenter-Manderscheid.

His memory will live on through the lessons he imparted and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him.

For those who would like to make a memorial donation in honor of Mark, the family requests they be made to “Thadd’s Place” through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home and Cremation Services, PO Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834. Online condolences can be shared at www.tamispinevalleyfuneralhome.com
