Kenneth Kulis, 81, of John Day, died Monday, July 25, 2022 at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon. A Celebration of Ken’s life will be held at the Senior Center in John Day on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with a potluck lunch to follow. The family will provide the main course and everyone else is welcome to bring a side dish of your choice.
Ken was born on November 17, 1940 and he grew up working on the family ranch. When Ken was 13 years old his father passed away, leaving him to care for the ranch. He milked his cows every morning before going to school and graduated from Baker High School in 1959.
He worked for the Forest Service for over 30 years, wearing many different hats, including heavy equipment operator, fire fighter, and supervisor of many. Ken was an avid lover of the outdoors. His hobbies included gold mining, woodworking, John Deere tractors, gardening and quilting. He also loved spending time with his family and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Joseph Kulis, mother Nelda Morton and stepfather Karl Morton.
Ken is survived by Gloria Kulis, his wife of 26 years; daughter Donnetta Kulis Wimberly (Frank) of Prairie City; granddaughter Sari Stoneman (Tyler) of Prairie City; grandson Justin Scheidegger (Kendra) of John Day; and four great-grandchildren: Miles and Cole Stoneman of Prairie City and Kensley and Kentin Scheidegger of John Day.
Ken has many stepchildren and step-grandchildren that he loved. Audra Wilson, Tracy Redmond, Jim Raymond, Crystal Cooper (Tyler), Kelly Baucum, Bill Baucum, Tammy Whipp (Chad) and her three children Cooper, Mason, and Abbi.
