Obituary

John Charles Ferguson

John, 74, lost his battle with cancer on July 12, 2023 at his home in Halfway, Oregon. Family members were caring for him at home, which is where he loved to be.

He was born on November 9, 1948 in Seattle, Washington to Jack and Eleanor Ferguson.  When John was 2 years old the family returned to Dorris, California to help Eleanor's family on the State Line Ranch. John loved the Ranch and all his first cousins to pal around with. He enjoyed the freedom of growing up in such a setting and also loved his Grandma and Grandpa Owen. He attended Butte Valley Elementary School until the family moved to Halfway, Oregon in 1959.

John attended Halfway Elementary and Pine Valley High School until he graduated in 1966. John was an outstanding student and graduated Salutatorian. He was also an excellent athlete and participated in all sports and extra-curricular activities offered. Baseball was his favorite sport.

He joined the Army in 1969 and spent a tour in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne. He was promoted to Sergeant and fought on the front lines as a foot soldier, a very traumatizing ordeal. He was honorably discharged from the Army with many honors, including the Bronze Star.

When he returned to the States he worked at Ellingson Sawmill and Powder River before moving to Alaska. There he was a heavy equipment operator for many years, specializing in operating a grader. John had the opportunity to travel to many exotic sites where his company built small airports and runways. He retired finally and returned to Halfway.

John loved to be outdoors and enjoyed all the wildlife that Halfway has to offer. He also loved his dogs and had several bird dogs that in later years just went for long walks, in lieu of "bird fetching."

John was a confirmed bachelor. He is survived by his brother Ron Ferguson; sister Susan Ferguson; niece Amburre Stafford and nephew Tate Vasey; two great-nieces, Amanda and Courtney and Great-Grand-niece Maisy. John will be sorely missed by his family.

A special thanks to his niece, nephew, Kristy Vannice, Brenda Fisher and Tami s Pine Valley.
