Jay Bird Obituary

Jay Bird, 64, of Halfway, Oregon died Monday September 29, 2025 at home.

Jay was born January 17,1961 in La Jolla, California to Bill and Dorothy (Wright) Bird. Over the years he lived in both Pasco and Dayton, WA before settling in Halfway, Oregon where he had many fond childhood memories. He graduated from Pasco High School in 1979 where he also played for the football team and had many friends. He spent his younger years helping out on the family farm and participating in his all time favorite sport: Motocross. Jay lived to ride and it was something he did fearlessly and with great passion. Many people who know him will remember him as “Flying Jay Bird”, as he was always soaring across a dirt track somewhere.

He worked for Seneca and Green Giant throughout the late 80s and mid 90’s where he was praised for his ability to be successful in any job he took on. He worked as a researcher, mill operator and groundskeeper during his career.

In addition to motocross Jay had many hobbies including: Sketching, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling and mountain biking. Anything you could do outside in nature he did, often said that nature is what “healed him”. He was always happiest outside with his beloved pit bull Boop, surrounded by mountains and rivers and animals. His best friend Ian Warner, his wife and their two little girls were a great source of stability and love over the decades, spending time with Jay and joining him on his many MX and fishing adventures.

Jay is preceded in death by his parents Dorothy and Bill, and his beloved sister Mickie Fjeld. He is survived by his daughters Stefanie and Tanya, his brother Wayne, and his nieces, nephews and cousins who all looked up to him growing up even when he teased them.

Jay will always be remembered as an adrenaline junkie, fearless and tenacious. His softer side gave him a love for animals and children. He loved deep conversations about the unknown, spirituality, and the world in general. He loved to have fun and to sing rock music in his truck while using the steering wheel as a stand in guitar. Words cant really describe how much his uniqueness, empathy, enthusiasm for telling a good story and his courage will be missed going forward.

We love you forever Dad, until we meet again.
