Janet “Jan” R. Dyke, 81, a lifetime resident of Haines, went to be with the Lord on September 13, 2025, after passing away in her sleep. A memorial service will be held on September 27, 2025~ 11 a.m. at the Haines Baptist Church in Haines, OR.
Jan was raised on the Peters’ Ranch, outside of North Powder, OR, and attended Power Valley Schools until she graduated on May 23, 1962. She married her High School sweetheart, Leslie (Les) Pointer, in June of 1962. They remained married for 32 years and had three beautiful children, Gary, Greg, and Gail, who have each settled in the Baker Valley. Janet then married Kevin Dyke on January 31, 1998, and remained married until her death.
While a teenager, Jan won many awards in 4-H sewing and made it to the state fair several times. She was in the Ladies' Aid group at the Haines Baptist church for years. While Jan didn’t appear to be built for the harsh winters and summers in the Baker Valley, standing all but 5’ 2” tall, she made up for it in grit, spirit, and hard work. She was often seen picking up rocks out of the fields and helping out on the Pointer farm. Jan greatly enjoyed gardening, baking, and harvesting her raspberries. While out in the woods she would also be found hunting morel mushrooms and wild huckleberries. Jan enjoyed regularly hosting large dinner parties in her home. She lived her life in service to God, family and friends.
She was the matriarch of the Pointer family and was fondly remembered as a homemaker, helping with contracting, milking cows, and farming. Jan expertly reupholstered furniture and cleaned houses throughout her life. Another act of service was cleaning the Haines Baptist Church for years, which led her to also reupholster all of the pews there, twice!. At one point, she was also known as the resident wallpaper guru, so you could say that she left her mark in multiple homes in Haines.
One of her greatest legacies was hand-embroidered and sewn baby blankets for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her last one was finished weeks before her latest great-grandchild was born. She also hand-embroidered and quilted a personalized quilt for each of her grandchildren to be presented to them at their high school graduation. Those who received her handmade pajamas were lucky indeed and grandchildren fondly called them their “grammie jammies”.
The family remembers fondly how Jan attended church, participated in bible studies, read her bible, and prayed for those she loved. Jan was quiet and liked to work behind the scenes, but was at every activity and event her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated in. Solid, immovable, and loving. If you knew Jan, she was a woman of few words. Her Christian faith may not have been communicated with words, but there was no denying whom
she served. She was selfless, always lending a helping hand and remaining faithful until the end. Jan loved her family with steadfastness and prayed diligently.
Jan was preceded in death by her grandparents: Alvi and Rose Peters, and Frank and Grace Loennig, and her parents Herman and Flora Lou Peters.
She is survived by her husband Kevin Dyke; her sons, Gary Pointer (Laura), Greg Pointer (Kathie), and daughter, Gail Daniels (Brandon); brother Jim Peters (Judie); She loved her grandchildren: Kate Wilson (Nathan), Kimberly Martinez (Chato), Nathaniel Pointer, Kayley AhHee (James), Samuel Pointer, Ariel Pointer, and Calder Daniels. She also loved her great-grandchildren: Madison, Adelaide, and Quinten Wilson, Ali Jo, Sadie and Eli Martinez, and David James AhHee, born two days after her passing.
