Jim Young Sr., 89, died on January 1, 2022 at the La Grande Post Acute Rehab. Jim's local VFW Post will honor one of his last wishes at one of their regular meetings and the family will gather in Jim's honor when the weather warms up.
James V. Young Sr. was born on January 31, 1932 in Phoenix, Arizona to Fred and Mabel Young. He was the oldest of 11 kids; 9 brothers and 1 sister. Jim graduated High School in Boise, Idaho.
Jim married Geraldine (Jerry) Willhite in 1952. He then joined the Army and did 1 tour in Korea, 3 tours in Germany and then all over the United States while raising 4 kids. He retired from the Army and became a reservist for more than 15+ years. Jim finished his degree for teaching and taught small engine repair at Lewiston Idaho college.
Jim moved to Halfway about 1972, where he ran a small engine repair shop for 30 years. Jim met Delita “Dee” Hohimer in Baker City while having a fun disagreement over the fence of a neighbors (of which both thought they were right) regarding food at the Stockman’s. Neither realized that the Stockman’s restaurant was in Halfway, but also in Baker City. Both were actually right. They married in Halfway, Oregon on February 11, 2015, but made their home in Baker City. Dee had a passion for rescuing animals and Jim supported her 100%. He had such a kind heart.
He loved his Veteran brothers. Jim was a life member of the VFW. Jim served as a Post Commander from 1983 to 1985 and also as a District Commander. He volunteered his time helping in any way he could. He was always the first to make a joke and had a great unforgettable laugh. Jim was also a member of the Panhandle Gun Club.
Jim is survived by his wife Dee; children: Nancy Pfaff, James Young Jr., Jackie Young, and Richard Young Sr. Ron Schneider and Kathy Harmon; Grandchildren Jacquin Pfaff (Bryon Shepard), Buddy Pfaff (Bridgette), Brandee Pierce (Rex) Tim Hanley (Autumn), Brandy Groce; numerous Great Grandchildren.
