GOOSE
December 4, 2023
A roof dancer, an expert mouser, and a gentle cuddler… Goose was my comfort and reassurance and she was my reality check when that was what was needed.
Appearing one day on my roof and then just as quickly, disappearing. A day or so later she reappeared and this time lingered until I went and got a ladder to try and help her down. A soon as I got near… poof - there she went and I think I heard a little chuckle. These sightings continued for a time so I began calling her a silly goose whenever I’d see her dancing along the ridges. Learning that she was a stray for several years, I started putting out a bit of food and fresh water; although she let me know her preference of fresh mouse, making sure that one day I could observe her hunting prowess and later savoring of the catch... ingesting the entire creature. Within a year, she would claim the porch rocker and once sure that I sufficiently respected her independence, she would officially adopt me, spending more and more time by my side and in the house. From the beginning, Goose had the utmost of house manners, warmly greeted all visitors, and became my closest buddy both inside and out. Within a few years her vision declined and she adjusted to indoor life with fish pates, kitty treats, and a scratching post. Goose allowed me to share in over 12 years of her life… her love and her lessons will never be forgotten. May she now rest in peace and dance along the rails of the bridge until we meet again.
