Ellen McBroom Obituary

Ellen McBroom, 85,of Baker City, died on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Memory Lane Assisted Living in Baker City, Oregon.

Ellen Elizabeth McBroom was born Nov 8th, 1936 in Cove, Oregon to Wayne and Mary Hoadley, the 3rd of 5 children. She grew up in Cove and graduated from the Cove High School.  She then went to business school in Baker City, taking secretarial classes.

Through her sister, Doris, she met Carlon McBroom in 1955 while he was home on leave.  He was stationed at Hunter Air Force Base near Savanna, Georgia.  They corresponded by mail for a year, getting engaged during that time.

In May of 1956, Carlon drove to Oregon to get Ellen and her belongings. They got married in Weiser, ID on their way back to Savannah.  Susan and Anita were born in Savannah.  In 1958, the family moved to Spain where Joe was born a year later.

In October 1961 the family moved back to the states in time for Larry to be born in La Grande.  The family lived in Boise, ID while Carlon finished his enlisted years at Mountain Home Air Force base.  They then moved to Baker City in 1963 where she resided for the rest of her life.

Ellen liked to work during the Fall potato harvest to make money that was hers to spend as she wished.  She also liked music and played her Hawaiian guitar when she had the house to herself.

When Ellen got older, she loved to read the newspapers and had a great memory.  She would read them from front to back and cut out articles she wanted to keep or share with others.  She was a bit eccentric, but her memory was still sharp and she loved to tell people about the latest news that she’d read or heard.

Ellen is finally at peace after spending a lifetime not quite in sync with the rest of us.  It will be awesome to see her in Heaven as the person she was meant to be!

Ellen is survived by her brother Harry Hoadley and sister Margaret Stanley; children Susan Green, Anita Wendt  and Larry McBroom; six grandchildren
