Betty Myers Obituary

Betty Myers, 80, a longtime resident of Baker City, died Monday, March 30, 2020 at her home in Baker City.  A celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 27, 2o20~11 a.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery.  Friends are invited to join the family for a reception to be held at the Missouri Flat Grange.

Betty Jane Myers was born July 21, 1939 to parents Ralph and Gladys Byrne in Baker City, OR.  Betty attended Goose Creek School until it closed in 1949 when Keating Elementary opened. She attended Keating Elementary through the 8th grade and then continued her education at Baker Middle School and Baker High School.

Betty met Carl Delano Myers one fateful day when he was driving his car in Baker.  He gave Betty a ride and the rest is history!  Betty married Carl on July 10, 1955 in Pacific City, WA by the Justice of the Peace.  Carl had to pay him $5 to marry them.  They quickly had sons Ben, Fred, Mike, and Dave in the first four years of marriage.   Thirteen years later they had Jack.

In 1957, they returned to Baker City. In 1962 they purchased the home that they raised their family in.  Betty managed the books for her husband’s construction company, Myers Construction, as well as her son’s carpet company, Ben Myers Floor Covering.

Betty enjoyed genealogy, flower pressing, gardening, roses, Indian paintbrush and lupines, feeding the birds and going for drives with her husband to look for wildlife.  Above all, she was immensely proud of the family she created with Carl and relished spending time with them. You would often find the boys and their families hanging out together at the house.  Betty was the best listener and would listen to problems or stories without judgement. She was equally as strong willed and stubborn as she needed to be to raise 5 boys.  We will fondly miss hearing Betty ask, “Where did I put my coffee cup”?

Betty was preceded in death by parents Ralph and Gladys Byrne; great-grandson Cooper Lane; brothers Bob, Ralph “Tiny”, and Joe Byrne; sisters Freda Byrne, Ada Patton, and Myrtle Whittaker.

She is survived by her husband Carl Myers of Baker City; sons Ben (Shane) Myers of La Grande, OR, Fred (Jarma) Myers of Baker City, OR, Mike (Susan) of Baker City, OR, Dave (Shelly) of Lake Forest, CA, Jack (Toni) of Baker City, OR; twin sister Bonnie Dunn, of Union, OR; grandchildren Andrew, Desiree, Brian, Zachary, Luke, Samantha, Mandy, Jeremy, Hannah, Joshua, Baylee, and Blaine Myers; 21 great grandchildren.
