Sterling Hayes

January 29, 2018

Sterling Lionel Hayes, 77,  of Baker City, Oregon, passed away on January 29, 2018, as the result of a severe stroke. Sterling was born on January 1, 1941, to Sterling and Mary Hayes in Baker City, Oregon. He was their first born, and also he was the first born that year (1941) in Baker City.

He spent a good part of his life in Washington where he met and married, Kathy, the mother of his three children, Sterling Jr., Gregg and Tami-jo. As a Boilermaker Boomer he traveled a lot. During this time he had another son, Mark. In all of the moving, son Sterling Jr. shared that "I went to 52 different schools."  Sterling moved back to Baker City in 1982.

Sterling will be remembered as being very kind, very different, super smart, loved animals and was a great dancer. He could fix and do most everything. He'll be remembered for his whimsical imagination, like the soapbox he built out of the hood of a truck for his grandchildren.  As well as all of the other wonderful things he built.

He was preceded in death by his wife Kathy and son Gregg.

Sterling is survived by his children Sterling Jr., Tami-jo and Mark; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and longtime companion Diana Borello.
