Welcome to the memorial page for

Helmet Roberts

December 6, 2017

Helmet, a German Shepherd (mix?), found me 56 miles outside of Tucson at a parrot sanctuary. He was 75 lbs. with ribs showing, cuts, cactus and a completely dried out nose. He was scared but so sweet. He didn't know how to play with toys at first but learn fast. Leash training took a lot longer because he wanted to run everywhere, smell and see everything. For 6 weeks, as we looked for his family I nursed and nurtured him. When it came time to get him neutered and find his forever home, I couldn't say good-bye.
Even at an impressive 109 lbs in his prime, he loved small animals, even the tiny dogs that thought they could take him in a fight. This southwestern dog was thrilled when we moved to Minnesota and he discovered the Mississippi river and SNOW! Our move to Baker, OR introduced him to his extended family and lots of new friends. Always playful, even when he could barely walk from hip dysplasia and arthritis, Helmet was always up for a walk and a stick toss.
I never knew how old he was or what he had been through before he found me, but we had almost 7 wonderful years together. He changed my life and will be missed.
