Gloria J. Diers of Baker City passed away on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018 at Meadowbrook Place Assisted Living. A service will be held later this Spring.
Gloria was born Aug. 16, 1925 to Joseph and Lillian Hopperstad in Enderlin, North Dakota. She was one of 12 children. Her family moved to St. Xavier, Montana in 1939 where she attended high school. She graduated in Hardin, Montana in 1942.
She married the love of her life, Gordys Diers in Denver, Colorado on Oct. 21, 1942. While he was serving his country in World War II, she worked as a civilian for the Pacific Overseas Air Transport Service Command and later with the Navy at Treasure Island near Oakland, California.
Later in life she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for the Denver Dry in Denver and then as an executive secretary for the Board of Directors of the Mt. Vernon Country Club in the Denver area. Together they owned the Pioneer Store in the mountains out of Golden, Colorado.
Gloria and Gordys moved to the Pine Creek area outside of Baker City in September of 1971. She was a Laubach Literacy volunteer in Baker City for many years and also volunteered at Churchill School in Special Reading and Special Math.
She belonged to First Lutheran Church and served as a council member and on various committees; she was also a member of the Lydia Circle. She regarded the church members as her second family.
Five years ago, Gloria moved to Meadowbrook Place where she met many new friends and received exceptional care. Gloria loved to play games of any kind with her family and friends. She especially loved to play Pinochle. She loved to feed the hummingbirds and collected music boxes. Most of all, she loved and enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordys who died Jan. 12, 1991, by five brothers and two sisters, and a grandson, Gared Diers.
Survivors include her oldest son, Gordy and wife Claire of Delta, Colorado; son, Gary of Portland, Oregon; son, Glen and wife Joanna of Edmond, Oklahoma; and daughter, Gina Perkins and husband Lynn of Baker City. 10 Grandchildren, Sarah Tal, Eric Diers, Kevin Diers, Audra Diers, Greg Diers,William Diers, Arden Perkins, Hayden Perkins, Evan Perkins, and Kelli Perkins-Rust. Five Great granddaughters, Noel Diers, Tabby Diers, Eden Diers, Cece Diers, and Gloria Bella Perkins, as well as many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Lutheran Church or to Meadowbrook Place (Activity Room) in care of Tami's Pine Valley Funeral Home and Cremation Services, P.O. Box 543 Halfway, Oregon 97834.
